Justin Charles Talk and Q&A

Justin Charles

Justin Charles was recruited to the Footscray FC after winning an under-19s B &F. He made his debut in 1989, however in the five seasons he spent at the club until 1993, he never could consolidate a position with spots for big players of his type competitive. Terry Wheeler then coach of the Bulldogs, was willing to put him up for trade, however Charles quit the club and took a year off from football. He had played only 36 games for 24 goals with the club.

Charles then took a year off football in 1994 where he turned his hand to baseball playing minor league with Florida Marlins.

He was then picked up by Richmond in the 1994 AFL Draft and immediately impressed the club with his work ethic. He became a fairly prominent ruckman and in 1996 polled 17 Brownlow votes with Voss and Hird and joint winners on 21

Late in 1997 AFL Season, Charles became the first player to test positive to an anabolic steroid, boldenone. The AFL suspended him for 16 matches as there was not an anti-drug policy in place at the time. Charles made a return to AFL late 1998 but injury led to his retirement shortly after, finishing with 54 games and 38 goals for the tigers

Justin has seen the highs and lows of major sport and is now an accomplished speaker who is able to rebuild individuals and teams through hard times. His experiences and thoughts on how teams think and behave are interesting and intriguing.

Vale: Andy Houston

BRFC & it’s past members would like to wish the Houston family our deepest sympathies at this sad time with the news of Andy’s recent tragic passing. Andy played for Black Rock FC for a number of years in the late 80s/ early 90s & will be remembered by all.

Bayside Council Proposes to Remove Funding for New Lights

MacDonald Reserve Lights

Attention members and local residents:
At the conclusion of the 2013 season, our home ground (Donald Macdonald Reserve) was set to receive a much needed lighting upgrade. The current lighting renders much of the ground unusuitable for night training, increasing the wear and tear on key parts of what is already a heavily worn and patchy playing surface.

We have been informed that the Bayside Council have decided to withdraw the funds needed to upgrade our lighting, as well as the facilities of other local sporting groups and given the entire fund to Sandringham FC for upgrade of the Trevor Barker Oval.

The decision to remove funding from the grass roots sporting clubs in the Bayside to benefit a professional sporting club who only have relatively few participants, along with PAID employees, is an absolute joke and strikes to the heart of the hard-working volunteers and players at the community clubs throughout Bayside.

Laurence Evans, is the Councillor that has put up this proposed change to the budget. He is a representative of the very ward that Macdonald Reserve is a part of, yet he is choosing to divert the funds outside of his own ward. We suggest that you get in contact with the two Southern Ward representatives to let your displeasure be known about this change.

Laurence Evans – Councillor -Southern Ward M: 0407 735 993 E: levans@bayside.vic.gov.au

Heather Stewart – Councillor – Southern Ward – M: 0407 040 813 E: hstewart@bayside.vic.gov.au

The Jets will be drawing up an official petition shortly. We ask that when distributed, as many people sign it as possible, to help show the council, that decisions such as this aren’t appreciated within the community in which they are elected to serve.
Please stay tuned to our social media and web site for more updates.

Thank you and go Jets!!

New Fitness Program: Starts This Thursday

The Jets would like to officially welcome Jay Lindley to the club as a strength and conditioning advisor/trainer. Jay has an exercise science background and currently runs his own physical training business. Jay was previously in the Navy and during that time was involved with the Cerberus Football Club.

Working with Jay, our players and coaches will have a better understanding of how to physically prepare and recover based on the specific demands Australian Rules Football and their own.

Jay is a local resident and has come to the club through a connection to Tessa and Sarah our partners from Physio @ Sandringham.
